Shih Tzus are one of the most misunderstood, dynamic, and ancient dogs in existence. The name ‘Shih Tzu’ translates into a little lion, but this toy breed is anything but tenacious.
Truth be told, despite how classy the Shih Tzu may be, how royal in looks, or their heightened place in history (bred for Chinese royalty), these dogs are tiny fluff balls who just want love and be loved in return.
Although Shih Tzus are a proud, royal, and dignified breed, they are by no means pompous or arrogant. Their reputation as one-person dogs is absolutely correct (often they choose who they love and attach to), but when people portray Shih Tzus as snarky, aloof, or aggressive dog, they refer to a dog that was either not raised properly as a result of careless breeding or both.
In reality, the Shih Tzu temperament and personality are far from what you would expect of a dog that could be considered ‘pampered’ or ‘posh.’ Their history has a great deal to do with their current reputation, but it should be known that a closer representation of the characteristics of the breed is loyal, loving, and attentive.
They are an incredibly enthusiastic, happy, gentle, loving, social dog. Take these attributes into account with the fact that they are also a toy-breed, and you have one of the best possible personalities and temperaments.
Shih Tzus are contagiously enthusiastic, incredibly adaptable, and will love you until the end of your days. While they may be a bit stubborn at times and have discomfort about separation, Shih Tzus are phenomenal dogs that are recommended for just about any type of owner.
