The personality of the Shih Tzu is greatly appealing, and even unwilling dog observers find it difficult to resist this breed. The Shih Tzu simply will not let anyone ignore them.
They were bred to be a friendly companion— they do not hunt, herd, or guard—and that is what they are. They love nothing more but meeting and greeting friends and strangers alike. Count on a Shih Tzu to make friends everywhere they go.
Whatever you do, there is a Shih Tzu ready to be with you. He is up for anything and demands nothing. He isn’t high strung and can make a great friend for a senior.
If you are doing something mundane like cleaning the fridge, he’ll be sitting by and watching with amusement. If you watch television, he is going to watch it as well.
The Shih Tzu is always ready if you are up for play. He will snooze with you if you are tired. He does not care what you are doing as long as he is with you.
Give him toys to play with; he can amuse himself. As long as you come home to them after work all day, and start giving him some love, it does not mind.
Shih Tzu’s tends to like dogs and kids. They enjoy playing dates and can be excellent therapy dogs. Some like cats, although some do not.
Nevertheless, it seems to be more of individual preference than a trait of the breed.
He is playful and naughty at times.
He will steal your shoes and slippers. Maybe, after he steals them, he wants you to chase him. On the other hand, if he really wants them, then he could just bury them. He is not going to take toys from other dogs, though.
