When it comes to obedience, every dog, and even Shih Tzus, need to be trained to listen. You do not want to be that dog owner at the park whose Shih Tzu doesn’t come at the call of commands. Repeatedly yelling to your dog in public is not only embarrassing but it can put your dog in danger as well. So, despite the fact that Shih Tzus are so small and often easily handled, basic obedience training is a must. In the video below, you will get to see eight weeks old Piper and Shakira, brothers, learn to sit and roll over during their first training session. Watch the basics of Shih Tzu obedience training:
As you can see in the video, the owner is using the lure obedience training method. This involves holding out a treat and beckoning to your dog with a command. Shakira quickly learns to sit and lay down for a treat. Although clearly more interested in zealously going after the treat, Shakira quickly rolls over. Piper on the other hand, was not into learning so much and basically just wanted the treat. However, Piper did end up sitting down for a treat but quickly gets back up and lunges for the next one. By using positive reinforcement and a gentle manner, both pups learned pretty quickly!
