Shih Tzu Growth Stages
Newborn
Shih Tzus are blind and deaf at birth. The newborn pup has a slippery coat and closed eyes and ears. Approximately 10 days after birth, the Shih Tzu puppy will open its eyes for the very first time — its vision will remain cloudy, though, for approximately a couple more weeks. Around 3 weeks after birth, the puppy gains full sight and its ears open and function for the first time.
Three to Six Weeks
Between 3 and 6 weeks after the puppy’s birth, it starts to play with its littermates. The pup can identify its mother, siblings, and humans in the family. Shih Tzus grow relatively fast and rest a lot during this stage. At 6 weeks old, the Shih Tzu puppy is ready to be weaned.
