Just as in human development, puppy development milestones follow a very predictable sequence of changes, although small dogs grow and develop much quicker and often reach maturity before larger breeds.

But generally, puppies grow up fast, In the wink of an eye, your Shih Tzu puppy will become an adult. So as a puppy parent, you don’t have much time to lose. Nevertheless, Shih Tzu puppies undergo several distinct growth phases during the first 8 weeks of life, that’s one of the facts you need to know about Shih Tzu breeds.

Shih Tzu Growth Stages

Newborn

Shih Tzus are blind and deaf at birth. The newborn pup has a slippery coat and closed eyes and ears. Approximately 10 days after birth, the Shih Tzu puppy will open its eyes for the very first time — its vision will remain cloudy, though, for approximately a couple more weeks. Around 3 weeks after birth, the puppy gains full sight and its ears open and function for the first time.

Three to Six Weeks

Between 3 and 6 weeks after the puppy’s birth, it starts to play with its littermates. The pup can identify its mother, siblings, and humans in the family. Shih Tzus grow relatively fast and rest a lot during this stage. At 6 weeks old, the Shih Tzu puppy is ready to be weaned.

Six to Eight Weeks

The distinctive fluffy Shih Tzu look starts to develop from 6 and 8 weeks after birth. During the last of our Shih Tzu growth stages, the puppy will be curious about its surroundings and will start exploring the home. Make sure to puppy-proof your home during this phase!
