Physical contact with a pet has been proven time and again to relieve people’s stress. Dogs are hailed as therapists all over the world, and lucky you, you have one in your own home. So when you groom your furbaby, you release some of that stress as well.
Bear in mind that the care and grooming of a clipped Shih Tzu has some similarity to that of the long-coated Shih Tzu. Keeping the coat short reduces the grooming time, but your Shih Tzu still has to be bathed and groomed nevertheless.
If you want to keep your Shih Tzu coat short, it’s still important that your puppy gets used to being groomed as soon as possible. Although it won’t take the coat to be clipped for the first few months, it is necessary to get the puppy used to being groomed regularly.
Spending about 15 minutes a day, gently brushing with a brush, will help the puppy to get used to it. The best time of day to have this done is when your Shih Tzu has had time to play and eat, and when you have time to spend with your Shih Tzu.
Grooming should be done on a table with a firm non-slip surface, enabling the Shih Tzu to become used to the table when he or she is brought to the grooming parlour for clipping, as well as it’ll restrict you from crouching too low when grooming him or her.
It is important to make grooming an enjoyable experience as much as possible. It is an opportunity for you to give your Shih Tzu one on one attention, so always ensure that you have the time to spend rather than doing a rushed job.
Making it as pleasant as possible will cause less stress for everyone, including your Shih Tzu.
