Shih Tzu is a dog that needs routine bathing and grooming. This happy, affectionate toy breed has a rich coat that needs to be bathed as frequently as every week, not more than every 3 weeks. The frequency of the baths depends on the size of the coat and the lifestyle of your Shih Tzu. The hallmark of the breed is its luxurious, double coat. The maintenance and care of the coat laid the foundation for the maintenance of healthy skin and coat. Regular baths promote the growth of the coat. A dirty coat is going to mat and tangle much easier than a clean coat.

When the coat is dirty and breaks, the hair shaft becomes rough and eventually breaks down, which will lead to further damage to the coat. Therefore, keeping the coat healthy and clean is of utmost importance in order to maintain the luxurious, double coat.

The coat must be free of mat and tangles. The coat of this easygoing little dog should be luminous and profuse while hanging straight and moving freely with the dog. Lightly clean the entire dog’s contours, removing any stray hair that disrupts the dog’s natural rhythm. Make sure not to over trim. End with a light hydrating spray mist.

If you are helpless to keep up with the abundance of a double coat with weekly bathing and brushing, by any means, choose to have your Shih Tzu groomed in a shorter trim. How big are Shih Tzu?
The Shih Tzu is a snugly built little animal with a solid, sound structure. It stands from about 8 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and should weigh from 9 to 16 pounds. Its body length is slightly greater than its height, and it should be physically proportional all over, not too short or too small, but a true miniature breed dog. The most common and incorrect pronunciation of Shih Tzu is: Sh*t Zoo however, that isn’t actually how the little lion breed is supposed to be announced. According to the American Shih Tzu Club, the official and publicly confirmed pronunciation of Shih Tzu is: “Sheed-zoo."

The name comes from the Chinese language word for "lion" because this kind of dog was bred to resemble "the lion, as in traditional oriental art". Interestingly they are also known by another name tied to their European introduction. The Shih Tzu is sometimes called the Chrysanthemum Dog, a nickname that describes the way the hair on their face grows out in all directions. They look like a flower with a nose for the centre.

What colours do Shih Tzus come in?
